pick a color

April 13th, 2010 | 4 Comments

Eric Wight and I are doing a program at the Philadelphia Free LIbrary Festival this weekend and we’re printing a poster for the occasion. However, I’ve not been able to choose a particular color combibation. So with a few days left before I print these, I thought I’d ask some opinions. A caveat is that the nature of screen printing dictates that colors aren’t always 100% predictable, and another is that we might end up making more than one version. Just curious what y’all think.

  1. The upper-left one is the one I like the most. It’s the one my eye keeps going to.

    I think this is why:

With the upper right and lower left pieces, since you’re already joining two very different half-bodies, having two very different colors works against the figure seeming in any way whole. (And since it’s a screen print, the eventual overlap between colors in both of those will potentially be even more distracting.) Also, the colors in the lower left one are so different, that my eye keeps jumping around, like I don’t know how to read it.

And for the lower right figure, the colors are so similar that one side simply looks like a lighter (or darker) version of the other.

In the upper left version, the colors are different enough to be distinct, but similar enough to seem cohesive.

    I’ll shut up now.

  2. Bobby.N says:

All look good, but when judging each in isolating – the bottom left one works for me best.

  3. Gary L says:

Another vote for the upper left.

  4. Brian says:

    Hey thanks dudes.
I had the choices up on Facebook as well, and the upper right one got by far the most votes. Mostly for that reason we did aqua and orange. I liked the two green ones myself.
