A few years ago, when I started taking my kids camping, I spent a lot of time looking for a good book on camping with kids. I’d been camping with grown-ups, but I wanted some idea of what I might expect with a then 4 and 6 year old that might be different. Food ideas, activities, things to bring, etc. I was disappointed when I couldn’t find much. What was out there seemed pretty out dated, or just boring. So imagine my surprise when I got a call from Workman Publishing, one of my favorite publishers, pitching pretty much exactly the book I’d been looking for, and they were asking me to illustrate it.
Camp Out! (the Ultimate Kids Guide) turned out to be that book and more. It covers everything: food, packing, songs, games, hiking, what to wear, weather, science, the night sky, and on and on. Plus it has some okay drawings to boot. Go get this book, pack up the kids, and drag them out to a state park near you. And for gosh sake don’t let them bring the GameBoy.
