The actual name for this book is One Beastly Beast, Two Aliens, Three Inventors, Four Fantastic Tales. It’s a collection of four stories written by Garth Nix. The stories involve rat pirates, tentacled aliens, a giant robot monster, a princess, some penguins, and a sea monster, among other things. Nix is mostly known for his work for grown-ups and older kids, but this book was written for 7-13 year olds in mind. But since I liked it and I’m forty, I don’t think it’s limited to that set.
Since I really like drawing things like mice flying in airplanes, robots, monsters, and aliens, this book was right up my alley.

In September of 2008, I found a large box from HarperCollins on my porch. Inside were six copies of One Beastly Beast, but in Japanese. I’m a big fan of Japanese-designed books and I was really happy to see these. They kept the basics of my design and illustration, and the type they used works perfectly even though it’s not my lettering. Furthermore, the interiors are really interesting with the vertical text. Maybe you can find this at a Japanese book store like Kinokuniya in San Francisco or Manhattan.
