Ten Trick or Treaters: a contest

In the wake of the great Adam Rex’s earth-shattering haiku contest he ran on his blog, I am copying him by having a contest of my own. Over the next week I’ll be posting ten trick-or-treaters here and on my Flickr page. They need names and maybe little descriptions. This is where you come in. In the comments section here and on my blog you can give each character a name, and tell his/her story.
The contest is being judged by Adam himself, world-famous author Judy Sierra, and if I can talk them into it, my kids. The winner will receive a copy of the book that Judy wrote and I illustrated called BEASTLY RHYMES, signed by me and I’ll draw the winning character in it. There will likely be more prizes as well. Stuff like canned fish and M&Ms. I hope to announce the winners on Halloween, Friday October 31.
I’ll be posting more info as it comes. Stay tuned for Trick-or-Treater numbers one and two…

me and Mom

A few weeks ago, my mom learned that she had come down with a bad case of the brain cancer. Specifically, an Astrocytoma Grade 4 Glioblastoma. She’s fighting it like Mike Tyson and I’m running 5k to support her. There’s a “Race for Hope” here in Philly on November 2 and if you’re reading this, I’d like your support.
Take a minute and go to this page and see if you can make a donation.
Thanks

A mysterious box from my childrens book agent arrived yesterday, filled with copies of One Beastly Beast, the book I illustrated in 2006, written by Garth Nix. The odd thing was that this is the Japanese edition. I didn’t know there was going to be a Japanese edition.
I’ve spent a lot of time and probably more money at Kinokuniya, the fantastic book store in Manhattan, and I’ve always loved the way Japanese design and books look. The vertical text, the use of color and surface, and even the paper stock. This edition nailed all of the above. I just love it.
It will likely be difficult to find the Japanese version around these parts, but you can still get the USA version pretty easily. Enjoy.

I was so so so excited today to find that my book Un Mode de Transport was written about the other day on my favoritest blog, Julia Rothman’s ‘Book By Its Cover.’ I’ve spent a lot of money as a direct result of Julia’s reviews, and discovered a lot of artists and books that I otherwise would not have. When I saw that she had written about that Play Pen book that I am in a while back, I sent her a copy of Transport, since that was the book of mine that was written about in Play Pen (still with me?). I was taking a break from picture-drawing today and when I went to the site I fell of my chair and danced for a minute. I like it when people say nice things. I really do.
