Ten Trick or Treaters: a contest

In the wake of the great Adam Rex’s earth-shattering haiku contest he ran on his blog, I am copying him by having a contest of my own. Over the next week I’ll be posting ten trick-or-treaters here and on my Flickr page. They need names and maybe little descriptions. This is where you come in. In the comments section here and on my blog you can give each character a name, and tell his/her story.
The contest is being judged by Adam himself, world-famous author Judy Sierra, and if I can talk them into it, my kids. The winner will receive a copy of the book that Judy wrote and I illustrated called BEASTLY RHYMES, signed by me and I’ll draw the winning character in it. There will likely be more prizes as well. Stuff like canned fish and M&Ms. I hope to announce the winners on Halloween, Friday October 31.
I’ll be posting more info as it comes. Stay tuned for Trick-or-Treater numbers one and two…

solidarity head shave
solidarity head shave

In preparation for her hopefully-cancer-removing surgery on Monday, and because it was falling out in clumps due to chemo, Mom had a head-shaving party tonight at my sister’s house in Arkansas. In solidarity, i decided to shave mine as well.
We set up the cameras and the video chat, I showed the kids how to use the clippers, and we went a-buzzin’.

me and Mom

A few weeks ago, my mom learned that she had come down with a bad case of the brain cancer. Specifically, an Astrocytoma Grade 4 Glioblastoma. She’s fighting it like Mike Tyson and I’m running 5k to support her. There’s a “Race for Hope” here in Philly on November 2 and if you’re reading this, I’d like your support.
Take a minute and go to this page and see if you can make a donation.
Thanks

This last Saturday, Wilson, Elliot and I volunteered at the kids’ old school to help build their new playground. When we arrived I was quite surprised to find hundreds of volunteers from the Wharton School of Business and Kaboom.org there to build as well.
The entire thing was completed in seven hours. We started building around 9:00am and we finished around 4:00pm.
I brought a camera, tethered it to my laptop via Firewire, and used iStopMotion to record about one frame every ten seconds. I made a little soundtrack with Ableton Live and the result was posted here. Enjoy.
