While waiting for my accordion to be fixed at Main Squeeze on Essex Street yesterday, I walked around the Lower East Side/Chinatown taking pictures of building signage with the iPhone. Here are some of the better ones.

the updated kid stuff

The new Audio section

I’m about to begin a major major overhaul of my website, MrBiggs dot com. I’ll be redesigning the whole thing, and adding a bunch of useful things like a searchable illustration portfolio, a “projects” section that will have thorough explanations and galleries of larger projects where a single portfolio image doesn’t work well, and a less clunky interface. To that end, I spent a few hours this last weekend updating the illustration departments and beginning the process of getting rid of these awful html frames that I built my site on in 1998. A couple of sections, animation and comics, haven’t got there yet. I also added a new section called “noise” in which I get to post the results of my electronic music hobby. Lastly, I’ve added many new works to the illustration and children’s sections including a lot of work I did for The Museum of Modern Art from 2004 – 2006 but never posted (because I’m an idiot).

Importantly also, while this work is going there might occasionally be a glitch where something is temporarily broken. This probably means that I am updating and working on it. So there that is. Enjoy.

I just returned from a two-week hiatus from the studio. It was hard work, but I had to go to Hawaii for eleven days. Sacha and I spent six days in Oahu and five in Kauai. I’ve traveled a lot, with museums and culture and learning and whatnot, but I think this is the first real vacation I’ve taken as an adult. I drew maybe one sketch in my notebook, so it was a true vacation from work as well. Instead, I spent my time driving around the islands with Sacha, cooking seafood on the bbq grill, practicing my new ukuleles, and taking pictures. Lots and lots of pictures. Here are some. You can find more on my Flickr page.

Now I’m back in the studio, in Philadelphia, and facing a daunting schedule that includes several children’s books and a number of other illustration projects. Stay tuned here for all that. Aloha.

And I’m going to Hawaii in two weeks.

I’m part of a beer club that meets once a month down the street in the basement of an Episcopal church. Typically we organize the meetings around tasting and discussing (and tasting) beer within a theme. For instance, Pilsners, or California micro-brews, or local ales, etc. We decided to brew our own back in December and show those who have never homebrewed the entire process. At a meeting in December we brewed a batch of IPA and one of a really dark Mexican-style lager (supposedly like a Negro Modelo) that I found in a beer cook-book.
WHen one brews, one always needs a name for said brew, and typically it’s nice to have a name for the brewery as well. Wilson and I have “Affe Haus” for what we make at home, which translates into (surprise!) Monkey House. We chose Church Basement Brewery for the church-brewed beer. And for the lager itself, celebrating both the holiday around which we brewed it and the three of us who did the brunt of the work (Chris, Kirk, and me) we went with Tres Hombres Sobrios, which means Three Wise Men, and which for anyone who really knows us, is funny.
For this occasion, I made labels. Thanks to Sacha for taking the picture.

iPhone home page
iPhone biz page

I was shopping at the Apple Store the other day and wanted to see how my site looks on the new iPhone (which I vehemently deny any interest in). Apparently the thing has problems with certain kinds of image tags and doesn’t know what to do with Flash and Javascript either. Absurd! Note that only one bird appears on the main home page image. Ludicrous! I’ll be waiting til v2.0. At least!

Here is where you can find information on new stuff, new projects, new appearances, new images, and generally new things that I’m somehow invoved in. If you’re looking for, say childrens books specifically, click on the categories and see what’s there. If you really loved me, you’d subscribe to the RSS feed so you can keep up.

Anything previous to today, Friday the 13th of October, probably won’t be here. But you can always look for it. If you have any specific questions about something you can’t find, email me.
