The Boy Who Cried Alien cover

Today is publication day* for The Boy Who Cried Alien, by Marilyn Singer. Illumastrated by me. Published by Hyperion. I wrote a lot about this book a while back, and I’ll write about it some more soon. Go now to Indiebound or a favorite book store and get one for you, your spouse, your parents, your siblings, and maybe your kids.

Go now and get it.

* I think it’s today. It may have been yesterday.

“in the air” takes shape

December 9th, 2011

I’ve been cranking out illustrations for the second book in the Everything Goes series for the past many weeks, and will be doing so for the next many as well. Here are some edits from two spreads in the book. Two helicopters, and one showing part of a cutaway of an airliner. Stay tuned for more.
The book will be out next September.

everything goes today!

September 13th, 2011

Today is the official publication date of Everything Goes: On Land. I’ve been anticipating September 13, 2011 for several years now and I was kind of hoping The Today Show and a bunch of news vans would have been at my studio door when I arrived this morning.
The book should be available at an awesome book store near you today, and if not, I know you can get it on Amazon dot com.

There will be a publication and signing party at Children’s Book World in Haverford, PA on September 24 at 1pm. If you live in the Philadelphia area I hope you can come out to this and say hi.
I’ll also be making an appearance on the 21st at the North American Independent Bookseller’s Association conference in Atlantic City on Sept 24.
Publisher’s Weekly will be publishing a little interview with me in a couple of days, so check back for that.

In the meantime, here are some photos of people happily enjoying Everything Goes. If you like the book, snap a picture like this and send it along.

By the way, one of these people actually appears in the book (albeit with a slightly different appearance). First one to find her or him and puts it in a comment gets a prize.

Everything Goes is coming…

Everything Goes: By Land

I came in to work this nice Monday morning and was fairly immediately greeted by the UPS truck outside. He gave me a package that I’ve been anxiously awaiting for several years now.
Everything Goes is now a book. Bound, with a cover and endpapers and a UPC symbol and an ISBN number and it’s got my name on it. I’m pretty glad to see this. Of course my plan today was to work hard on book two, but that got preempted since I had to take pictures…

a little Everything Goes goes a long way

October 20th, 2010

I’m in the downhill run of completing the first book of the Everything Goes series. Everything Goes: On Land will be published next year by Balzer + Bray, an imprint of HarperCollins. I thought I’d post a few pieces of the illustrations as I complete them. These are just line-art and aren’t colored yet. They are small snippets of these huge 20-inch x 12-inch spreads that are just full of all kinds of trucks and cars and bikes and cars and motorcycles and more cars. And trains. But I haven’t got to the trains yet.

More of these to come.

This is a “preparatory” image for a book I’m illustrating and starting to work on. It’s a pretty large black & white painting with color added in Photoshop. The book is nuts and will look pretty different from most of the other stuff I’m working on. It’s supposed to be done late this year and will be published sometime in 2009. More to come.

Roscoe Riley Rules

May 8th, 2008

These three books, written by Katherine Applegate and published by HarperCollins, are coming out on May 27. They are the first three of a series of six and possibly more chapter books, for which I am illustrating the covers and interior illustrations. Roscoe is a nice kid who keeps getting into trouble. The stories are really cute and perfect for kids just learning to read. I spoke to someone at Children’s Book World in Haverford yesterday who told me that they expect these to sell like gangbusters.
You don’t have to wait for May 27, however. If you come to the Philadelphia Book Festival on Saturday May 17, you can get your copy then. I’ll be there signing and talking at 3pm.
